2019 Audi RS5 Sportback

A few years ago, there was only a couple of four-door coupes but the market is now full of them hence Audi’s decision to give its RS5 Coupe a slight twist to come up with the 2019 Audi RS5 Sportback.  The new model integrates the looks of a 4-door coupe and that of a 4-door hatchback resulting in a somewhat unique design for the automaker.

The RS5 Sportback is quite attractive to the eye. Although it is neither a 4-door coupe, not a hatchback, the RS5 Sportback looks will give the likes of BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe and Mercedes CLS sleepless nights. At the front, one is confronted with a gigantic single-frame grille with RS-spec honeycomb mesh. There are also huge corner air vents with similar RS-spec honeycomb mesh. The hood is also revised and looks more aggressive than that of the coupe.

Each flank has two doors which I usually find unusual as I am yet to get used to 4-door coupes. The flanks also feature sharp body lines and a raked roof at the rear. The Sportback’s mirrors are further back than usual. The lower body appears to expand slightly from the body for a raked look and also to emphasize the model’s lower stance which by the way is 7 mm lower compared to the RS5 Coupe (this may, however, be not so apparent from just looking at the RS5 Coupe and the Sportback side-by-side).

At the rear, the RS5 Sportback has a rear door rather than the conventional decklid. There is a small carbon fiber lip at the edge of the door to add to the extremely sculpted look of the rear fascia. The taillights are slightly modified. There is an aggressive diffuser which supports the car’s dual exhaust tips while the slim reflectors feature a slight carbon fiber trim.


Audi has cleverly designed the interior such that despite the slanting rooftop, the model comfortably accommodates five passengers.  All seats are wrapped in leather; the driver and front passenger get S Sports seats that have embossed headrests. The rear gets a bench that has adequate supports on each side. The rear bench also features hexagonal stitching with body-colored stitches; the center section sits higher and has a backrest that can be pulled down to act as an armrest if it is not occupied.

The front of the cabin features a dominant carbon fiber trim; on the dash, steering wheel, center console as well as on the gear shifter. Audi has retained the floating display with RS-specific graphics like on the RS5 Coupe. The flat-bottomed steering wheel also features perforated leather upholstery with a similar stitching as the seats. Ahead of the steering wheel is a regular Audi instrument panel but buyers can go for a virtual cockpit that features RS-specific graphics. The door panels feature carbon fiber and Alcantara trim while stainless steel is used on the pedals.

Audi has not mentioned how much cargo the model can accommodate, the automaker however disclosed that the rear seats can be folded down to expand the cargo volume.

Although its basic shape betrays it as a family car, the RS5 Sportback is a serious all-out sports car. This is why things such as traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, and active cruise control are offered as options rather than standard. Buyers who buy such a sporty model often look forward to driving it as if they stole it hence see no need for driving assist systems.

Engine and performance

The 2019 Audi RS5 Sportback is powered by the same power-train as the RS5 Coupe; the 2.9 L, Bi-turbo V-6. This is the same mill that motivates the Porsche Panamera. In the Sportback, the engine is twisted to produce 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The shifting role is given to Audi’s 8-speed automatic system and uses the Quattro AWD system to convey power to all wheels. Torque is split 40:60 between the front and rear axles which means the model will be pretty engaging as well as exciting to drive. It can reach 60 mph in under 4 seconds while its top speed is limited to 155 mph. Adding the Dynamic package raises the electronic speed limiter to 174 mph.

The Sportback’s suspension system is 0.28 inches lower compared to the coupe while the body is an inch which enables it to handle more sharply. There is an option for a sports suspension that features dynamic ride control which allows the driver to customize suspension based on his/her needs

Price and release date

Audi is still keeping pricing details of the RS5 Sportback a secret. However, going by the automaker’s pricing structure, the RS5 Sportback will be more expensive than the RS5 Coupe which has a starting price of $69,900. A starting price in excess of $75,000 is likely. Sales are set to commence later in the seconds half of this year.
