Geneva has always been a special place for Ferrari as it is the automaker’s favorite place to debut its new supercars. This year’s Geneva Auto Show is not any different as the automaker has taken to the show to debut its new race-car inspired street-legal beast dubbed the “ 2019 Ferrari 488 Pista ”. “Pista” means “track’’ in Italian. Although it is street-legal, you will definitely find most buyers of the Pista out on the tracks as that is where one can really get the most out of the model. It is based on the 488 GTB but it also borrows a lot from the 488 Challenge car and the 488 GTE.

2019 Ferrari 488 Pista Exterior

The 488 Pista like its street-legal predecessors bridges the gap between the race-spec GTE and street-legal 488GTB. The model looks more menacing than the 488 GTB but not as much as the GTE. It also looks sportier compared to the Ferrari 458 Speciale. The engineers threw away the GTB’s bumper and replaced it with a new unit whose design is derived from dedicated motorsport racers. It features the S-Duct and a complex design for the splitter (both are inspired by F1 cars). Like the 488 GTE, the unit has a strong suction that helps enhance its down-force. The splitter has 3 elements while the new side vents look more enormous. The snout looks as if it is floating above the model’s bumper. The hood has a huge vent that extends from one pair of the headlights to the other; it also has a small V-shape layout on the rear section.

Changes are less radical on the flanks; the side skirts are slightly wider while the model’s rear fender vents are not split into two like on the GTB. The fenders also have a black trim. The design is meant to improve cooling of the engine.

The rear fascia has been revised to look more aggressive; it has a new spoiler which is bigger and sits higher; it also has a dolphin-tail design that makes it appear to float above the deck-lid. The upper section of the rear fascia is sculpted to enhance airflow above and through the spoiler. The rear diffuser is much larger than on the GTB; in fact, it occupies almost half of the rear. The 488 Pista has large vertical fins that stretch much deeper under the car’s body like the case in race-spec cars. The rear end also has two enormous vents. The normal glass-lid engine hood found on the GTB is retained without any changes.

The 2019 Ferrari 488 Pista has a black interior styling and red accenting on the dash, center console and seats. The center console is made of carbon-fiber. On the passenger side of the dash is a “488 Pista” emblem to ensure no one mistake sit for a 488 GTB. The is also a carbon-fiber trim around A/C vents, a black-trimmed steering wheel and a yellow counter on the instrument cluster rather than the regular red counter.

The car has an exposed floor while its Alcantara seats look sportier than those of the GTB. The seats also offer enhanced support, especially during spirited driving.

Engine and performance

A go-fast car is defined by the amount of power it packs under its belly; the 488 Pista packs plenty of it. It derives its power from the same twin-turbocharged 3.9 L V-8 from the standard Ferrari 488 GTB. The Pista, however, produces 710 horses compared to the standard 488 GTB’s 661 hp.  Torque is also slightly up from 561 lb-ft to 568 lb-ft.

This is the most potent V-8 yet in Ferrari’s history.

Because the Pista is around 200 pounds lighter than the standard 488 GTB, the model is much faster and dashes to 62 mph in only 2.9 seconds; it takes 7.6 seconds to hit 124 mph on its way to a top speed of 211 mph.

The excellent performance is also courtesy of the model’s lighter weight at only 2,822lbs, 198.5 less than the GTB. The engine is also lighter courtesy of technologies derived from the 488 Challenge racer. Also, compared to the 488 GTB, The 488 Pista down-force is up by20% which ALSO enhances the supercar’s performance.

Price and release date

First deliveries to well-heeled buyers will start this fall. Ferrari is yet to put a price tag on the model but it will definitely cost much more than the 488 GTB whose price starts at slightly over $300, 000. The 2019 Ferrari 488 Pista is currently on show at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.
