Kia first released the K900 sedan in 2012; it’s the automaker’s most lavish flagship sedan that replaced the Amanti, a sedan that failed to win hearts in the U.S. automotive market. Kia introduced the second generation of the sedan to the U.S. market at the 2018 New York Auto Show. In showrooms new 2019 Kia K900 is expected in the second part of this year.
2019 Kia K900 Exterior
Although it is recognizable as a Kia, it has its own styling cues. At the front is the signature “tiger nose” grille but customized for the K900 (it looks taller and wider than on other Kia models).The grille also has new mesh. The sedan has smaller headlamps than on the outgoing model. The headlights also have a special LED layout featuring 2 U-shaped strips that appear as if they are floating under the major lights. The bumper is simple and clean.
On the sides, the beltline has been pushed beyond the door handles making it look unique compared to its rivals that still have their beltlines below the door handles. The rear quarter window is new; it makes the flanks look sportier. The D-Pillar is shorter which has enabled for a longer decklid. The fastback look remains despite the changes; The K900 will roll on new 19-inch wheels.
The rear design is also clean; there are smaller taillights that do not stretch into the decklid like on the current model. Their design mimics the headlamps (they also feature U-shaped LED bars). The chrome strip that cut across the width of the fascia on the current model was done away with; however, the taillights have a chrome surround and the automaker added a new chrome bar to the rear bumper. The model has rectangular exhaust pipes.
The cabin of the Kia K900 is as premium as those of German-made rivals if not better; in fact, the cabin was among the key selling points of the current model. The new sedan takes things to a higher level. The cabin looks wider due to the horizontal orientation of most of the features on the dash. The design is minimalistic yet elegant with wood veneers and a metal trim. Buyers can choose from 4 open-pore matte wood designs (Engineered Wood, Walnut, Beige Olive Ash, and Brown Olive Ash). Most of the surfaces are wrapped in soft leather which comes in Beige, Black, Espresso Brown or the 2-tone Sienna Brown color.
The seats which are also wrapped in leather have quilted shoulders. The front seats are heated and ventilated; they also feature 20-way adjustability with lumbar support. The rear seats have an option for 12-way or 14-way adjustability. Heating and ventilation is optional for the rear seats.
The dash which looks clean has a specially designed analog clock by Maurice Lacroix. The sedan features a leather-wrapped steering wheel which is also heated, a new ambient lighting system (it features 64 colors and 7 color settings). The system was developed in partnership with the Pantone Color Institute).
The sedan also features a 12.3-inch infotainment system, a UVO Luxe as well as navigation systems. There is also a fully-digital 7.0-inch instrument cluster and an option for a 9.7-inch head-up display. Audiophiles will love the 17-speaker, 900-watt Harman Kardon audio system.
The 2019 Kia K900 also features advanced driver assist systems including Blind Spot Monitor, Surround View Monitor, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Avoidance Alert, Driver Attention Warning, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, and Lane Follow Assist.
Engine and performance
Motivating the 2019 Kia K900 is a twin-turbocharged 3.3 L, V-6 engine similar to the one that powers the Stinger. It produces similar 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, an improvement of 69 hp and 119 lb-ft of torque over the outgoing K900. The mill is equipped with a CVVT system (continuously variable valve timing), a 600-watt electric motor as well as a wider radiator for enhanced airflow and cooling. The K900 uses a new 8-speed automatic gearbox that features Shift-by-Wire gear selector. There is also a Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control All-Wheel-Drive system for enhanced handling, stability, and agility. The AWD system has a rear bias (in Sport mode up to 80% of torque can be channeled to the rear axle).
The model’s chassis has also been upgraded; the new unit has an enhanced lateral stiffness both in front and at the rear. Torsional stiffness has been enhanced by 33%. The new suspension system has a 4-wheel layout. There is an option for an electronically controlled suspension system that boosts performance while reducing variation in chassis motion and wheel load.
Kia has not revealed whether this engine will be used in the U.S. market in addition to the 5.0 L, V-8. The V-8 produces 420 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque; I bet Kia will up the engines power output slightly to compete well with its rivals.
Price and release date
The 2019 Kia K900 will go on sale in the U.S. in the final months of 2018; prices are yet to be released. The current model starts at $49,900 and due to the new changes, the model could start at around $52,000 while the models powered with the more powerful V-8 could attract around $63,000.
