10,000 Mini Tuning Kits and Counting for John Cooper Works
At just two and a half years old, the John Cooper Works (JCW) tuning kit is celebrating a momentous double milestone this month, with news of the kit's imminent inclusion on MINI's Oxford production line (from October) coinciding with JCW's West Sussex HQ distributing its 10,000 unit.
Demand for the JCW kit - the only MINI-endorsed tuning kit - has never been stronger, particularly in the UK, where one in nine Cooper S hatchback purchasers last year opted to up their MINI's power output from 170 to 210bhp. Brits now sit atop the international MINI power league, ahead of both the Americans and the Germans in the ratio of JCW kits fitted to cars sold.
By May this year, four hundred kits had already been sold to UK MINI drivers, more than in the USA, which sells twice as many Cooper S.
In line with the global popularity of the tuning kits, the growing range of John Cooper Works accessory products is also flying off the shelves. Introduced at the start of the year, seven hundred sets of the new JCW Sports brakes, which will be factory-fitted alongside the JCW tuning kit from October, have already been sold worldwide.
For Cooper S Works drivers looking to add a sportier edge to both the interior and exterior appearance of their MINI, the recently-introduced JCW carbon fibre interior trim, bonnet scoop and mirror covers have all been well received, particularly in the USA, where over twelve hundred carbon fibre interiors were sold last year.
Mike Cooper, Managing Director of John Cooper Works, has collaborated closely with MINI on the kit's introduction onto the production line at Oxford; the move represents another significant step forward for his Sussex-based company:
"We have enjoyed a very productive working relationship with MINI to date and are thrilled to be entering a new and exciting chapter. Drivers are as hungry for power today as ever before, and making the JCW tuning kit a factory fit option is a logical next step."
The JCW tuning kit will still be available as a retrofit option from either John Cooper Works in East Preston, West Sussex or any of the 157 UK MINI dealerships. |
