With the wheels which traditionally are very characteristical with Lamborghini, a synthesis from traditional round hole - design and spokes is brought to a new design topic. The development of the design on the basis of the given vehicle-lay out was integrated in the project right from the start. Only in this way could the stylistic and functional demands be harmonized. Short: details and proportions of the Gallardo-design are vicarious for Lamborghinis unmistakable, uncompromising appearance.

Engine

The Lamborghini 90 degrees V engine with 5 litres, 10 cylinders, each two camshafts (DOHC), 500 HP and a torque of 510 Nm is the centre piece of the special dynamical performance of the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Instead of the more classical 72 degrees V the decision was made for a 90 degrees angle due to the minor engine height, because this offered advantages regarding the layout (e.g. lower bonnet and better view to the back) and the lowering of the centre of gravity (e.g. better vehicle dynamic). Even the ignition intervals which determine the running smoothness of the engine, are optimised through fitting crankshaft journals entwined by 18 degrees.

The dry-sump lubrication does not only ensure a correct lubrication even at extreme driving conditions but also permits a further lowering of the centre of gravity.

The torque throughout the complete speed range is enormously high. Additionally the charging efficiency at varying revolutions is increased through the exact definition of the gas dynamics in intake and exhaust tract. Their effects are controlled through an induction manifold with mobile geometry and a continuously variable valve control (intake and exhaust).

While the variable geometry (which may be defined as "variable length") makes sure of the optimal basic characteristics of the gas dynamics at low (long intake way) as well as at high revolutions (short intake way), the variable valve control guarantees that the valves open and close at the optimal point of time throughout the whole speed range. For example the intake valve close earlier at low revolutions and later at high revolutions in order to use the positive pressure impulses at the intake valves.

The maximum torque of 510 Nm at 4.500/min is achieved whereby 80% of this extreme value is already reached at only 1.500/min.
The maximum performance is reached at 7.800/min.

The gas control is handled via a drive-by-wire-system with two electronically controlled throttle valves.
