Suspension and brake system
The decision for front and rear double wishbones complies with the tradition of Lamborghini - a must for high performance sportcars.
The exact defined geometry, the characteristics of suspension and stabilisers as well as the "self-regulating" frequency selective dampers by Koni were of fundamental significance when fulfilling the aims regarding handling, stability at high speeds and comfort efficiency.
Great attention was paid to the optimisation of the cornering ability of the Lamborghini Gallardo. In order that the vehicle stays optimally controllable, it slightly understeers when entering a corner and acts neutral in the remaining curve progression. So even in tight hairpin bends there is no building up as it can be seen with numerous vehicles with all-wheel-drive and Visco-clutch.
The introduction of the "anti-dive" and "anti-squat" function guarantees an optimal vehicle behaviour even in acceleration and braking processes.
Just the same attention was laid on the point stability and controllability at high speeds where among others the right aerodynamical characteristics play a big role. The P-Zero-tyres by Pirelli (front 235/35 ZR 19, rear 295/30 ZR 19) guarantee optimal wheel grip in the most various driving conditions. As special equipment winter tyres in these dimensions were developed which will be available from next autumn.
Lamborghini Gallardo is equipped with 19-inch-wheels so that brake discs with a large diameter (front 365 mm, rear 335 mm) as well as Brembo 8-piston brake callipers on the front and 4-piston brake callipers on the rear could be fitted.
This brake system which additionally is equipped with a highly modern ABS/ESP-system, guarantees an excellent degree of efficiency (delay of 1,1 g on dry underground) without any fading even in extreme situations. The fully electronical stabilisation programme (ESP) was developed and calibrated in order to support the driver in difficult situations but at the same time enable him a sporty manner of driving.
Passive safety
The Gallardo by far supersedes all European and North-American safety standards. Just one example: the two-step-front air bags for driver and passenger which also meet the future "Out-of-Position" requirements and are standard in all version - just like head-thorax-side air bags and crash protection.
Performance
The great engine performance and the high torque permit a top speed of 309 km/h and an excellent acceleration.
Also at top speed the vehicle stays convincingly stable and controllable. The reason is not only the optimized suspension kit, but also the correct definition of the aerodynamical features - an absolute must with this car. The developers did not only concentrate on the reduction of the friction factor, but more important, on the lift coefficient on the front and rear. These examinations lead to an aerodynamical fine tuning of the body with marked effects on the form (e.g. front flap, flat floor), as well as the introduction of a rear spoiler which is controlled electronically depending on the vehicle speed.
