| | | | The grille, side mirrors and front bumper are finished either in body colour (mid and high equipment grades) or black (entry grade), while high grade versions include a chrome-finished front grille design with a large, chrome-plated Mazda logo, front fog lights, side steps, chrome mirror housings and exterior door handles.
Three Body Styles - whatever you want to do The new Mazda BT-50 offers Europeans roomy cabin space in three different and very practical configurations and equipment grades for just about anything you want to do. Higher cargo deck walls (up by 60 mm) mean more load capacity than before. Transporting stuff in the box is now more practical too, with new guiding groves on the insides of the box, which allow you to slide in a divider to form two separate compartments, one on top of the other.
The Regular Cab is intended for commercial owners, has two doors, two seats and the longest cargo box at 2,280 mm (all cargo boxes are 1,458 mm wide and 465 mm high). The two other body styles both have four doors and higher levels of practicality and comfort. The Freestyle Cab has a cargo box that is 1,753 mm long combined with centre-opening doors that open to nearly 90 degree for easy access to the rear seat area, whether it be for loading larger items for transport behind the front seats, or for transporting two passengers to work or to the beach. And finally the Double Cab version has the shortest cargo box, at 1,530 mm long, four doors and the largest cabin area with room for five to travel in comfort, even on longer trips.
Interior Design - sedan-like quality feel
Interior designers of the new BT-50 focused on delivering interior sophistication that gives Mazda's new pickup a truly sedan-like feel. For the Regular Cab, a two-tone grey colour and new materials are introduced that, with silver accents, make for a clean and modern look. For both the other cabin styles, the interior features new fabrics for an elegant and sporty interior feel. All models have a new instrument panel with visual highlights similar to those found in Mazda passenger cars. The three-dial instrument cluster now has white lettering on a grey background with green backlighting and silver rings (depending on grade) around each meter, which lends the interior an added look of sophistication. An all-new centre stack is introduced as well, with a silver-look panel that is echoed by a silver-faced door switch panel, shift knob face and chrome-plated inner door handles and meter rings - for a coordinated look of luxury.
Functionality and Storage - new slide-out tray The BT-50 not only delivers sedan-like comfort, it is also practical to use with plenty of small item storage. A new slide-out tray is introduced, located above the large glove box, which is large enough to hold objects like CDs when closed. When pulled out, it can carry up to 10 kg making it strong enough to function as a small table for a laptop or to write on when the pickup is parked. The floor console has a new design that integrates the console storage box, removable ashtray and four cupholders (depending on model) into a single unit. The console box has two interior compartments - a 1.7-litre upper storage compartment and a large, 5.1-litre lower box. The BT-50's front and rear door trim panels include a deep pocket with bottle holders (depending on model), while the Freestyle Cab has a handy tool box under the rear cushion of the left rear seat.
New 2.5-litre MZR-CD Turbocharged Diesel
A new Mazda-developed MZR-CD 2.5-litre common-rail DOHC 16-valve diesel engine is introduced that is more powerful (with an extra 34 PS and 64 Nm), quieter and more fuel efficient than the outgoing model's engine. With this new engine, the BT-50 is ideal for a number of driving styles - for carrying heavy loads on the job, off-road adventures, or cruising on the motorway. It achieves maximum power of 143 PS/105 kW at 3,500 rpm and delivers robust torque of 330 Nm at just 1,800 rpm for responsive acceleration throughout the speed range and for strong pulling power. The new BT-50 in its 4WD version can now tow a maximum of 3,000 kg with a braked trailer, which is 200 kg more than the outgoing 4WD model, an improvement of more than 7 %.
