Nitrous Oxide Tuning
Before we go, I decided to write down a few lines about nitrous oxide so things will be more clear while reading the article.- First of all, Nitrous Oxide is not a fuel (Yes, that's true, we will talk about this later on)
- Nitrous is not flamable, thus, the scene which Brian shouts in Fast & the Furious "NOOsSSS!!" and the green Mitsubishi explodes is not impossible.
- Using the term "NOS" is completely wrong, because NOS is the name of a company, just like MOMO, SPARCO or APEXI. The right term would be "Nitrous Oxide".
The combustion & engine power basics
We all know that combustion takes place by mixing air and fuel at the combustion chamber. An engine operates by burning fuel, which then pushes the pistons down. Want to make more horsepower? Burn more fuel so it will push the pistons down with more force. This is what we need for generating more power in an engine, but it will be impossible to generate this power without extra oxygen. From our chemistry and physics lessons, we all remember that we need oxygen in order to burn the fuel. Nitrous oxide systems make additional horsepower by allowing an engine to burn more fuel than it could normally do.
Nitrous Oxide
Normally, the air we breathe is:
- 20.947% oxygen
- 78.08% nitrogen and
- less than 1% other gases.
Nitrous Oxide, in fact, is basically the same, it just has a higher percentage of Oxygen: 36.35%.
Nitrous Oxide is a colorless, odorless & non-flammable gas composed of 2 nitrogen and 1 oxygen atoms. That's where N20 comes from. It has a slightly sweet taste and odor. It is non-toxic and non-irritating and when inhaled in small quantities can produce mild hysteria and giggling or laughter.
