SUBARU REDESIGNS AND REPOWERS 2006 IMPREZA LINE
IMPREZA WRX ADDS 230-HORSEPOWER 2.5-LITER BOXER TURBO
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE WITH NEW IMPREZA 2.5 i POWERTRAIN

CHERRY HILL, N.J., July 26, 2005 - Subaru of America, Inc., America's all-wheel drive leader, has introduced a restyled and re-powered Impreza model line for 2006, also adding three new WRX models, more safety features, and a revised Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system in the 300-horsepower WRX STI.

All Subaru models are equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard equipment, providing a traction and handling advantage over front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive vehicles.

The Impreza line has been restyled for 2006 to reflect the new brand identity. The new Subaru signature front-end design for Impreza features a three-section mesh type grill inspired by the company's aircraft heritage, plus boldly styled headlights with smoke-tinted lenses. Sedan models feature revised wide-body fenders, while the wagons have their own flared fender design, as on the previous model. All 2006 Impreza models get a new tail lamp cluster design, as well.

The Impreza 2.5 RS models have been renamed 2.5 i for 2006, making their nomenclature consistent with the larger Subaru Legacy models. Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models get a boost to 173 horsepower from 165 horsepower with the addition of the i-Active Valve Lift system and the Electronic Throttle Control system to their 2.5-liter Boxer engine. All 2006 Impreza models get a new dual-stage Subaru Advanced Airbag System. In addition, the Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models gain front seat head/chest side-impact air bags already provided in the WRX models.

Subaru expanded the WRX series for 2006 with a new, lower-priced WRX TR Sedan, along with the premium-level WRX Limited Sedan and WRX Limited Sport Wagon models that feature additional luxury amenities. All WRX models get a complete engine transplant for a significant boost in performance. A 230-horsepower 2.5-liter intercooled turbocharged engine replaces the 217-horsepower 2.0-liter engine used since the WRX model's introduction. The larger-displacement engine produces 235 lb.-ft of peak torque at 3,600 rpm, compared to 217 lb.-ft. at 4,000 rpm for the previous engine.  Even more than these numbers suggest, performance is improved in all speed ranges, with greater emphasis on low-end and mid-range torque.

Along with the boost in power, WRX models provide enhanced chassis performance for 2006 with aluminum front suspension links, a quicker steering ratio, 17-inch alloy wheels replacing 16-inch alloy wheels, wider, lower-profile tires and larger, more powerful brakes.

Impreza 2.5 i - The Most Affordable AWD Sport Compact

The Impreza 2.5 i models continue with the sport-tuned suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels and sport-design front seats featured on the previous 2.5 RS models. Also continued is the generous standard equipment list that includes a 4-wheel independent suspension, 4-channel/4-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), air conditioning with new air filtration system, power windows, power mirrors and door locks, remote keyless entry, AM/FM stereo system with single-disc CD player, tilt-adjustable steering column, security system and a new outside temperature gauge.
