In addition, a new Subaru Navigation System is available on several 2006 Legacy models. The DVD-based navigation system uses a seven-inch touch screen panel in the center dash. The navigation system's integrated trip computer replaces the trip computer that's standard on all Legacy models.

Subaru has long been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for producing cleaner vehicles. For 2006, the Legacy Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) models sold in California, New York, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont produce the same horsepower as federally certified models sold in all other states. In contrast, many PZEV-compliant vehicles sacrifice some power to achieve zero evaporative emissions.

The Legacy is designed to expresses its dynamic performance and nimbleness, and in particular its low center of gravity - a hallmark of all Subaru models. The pronounced wedge body shape conveys a low and stable presence, accentuated by aerodynamic side ground effects and standard 17-inch alloy wheels. The sedan's rear glass is slightly recessed in "sail panels" for a distinct appearance, as well as aerodynamic efficiency. On Legacy 2.5 GT Limited and spec.B models, a functional hood scoop supplies outside air to the engine-mounted intercooler. Tailpipe tips on all Legacy models (chrome on the 2.5 GT Limited) extend from the dual-muffler exhaust system through bumper cutouts for a sporty flair.

High-Performance Intercooled / Turbocharged Engine

The Legacy 2.5 GT Limited models are powered by an intercooled and turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine that produces 250 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of peak torque @ 3,600 rpm. This engine shares architecture and technology with the engines used in other Subaru turbocharged performance models such as the Impreza WRX STI, but most key components - including the cylinder block, turbocharger and intercooler - are unique to Legacy 2.5 GT Limited and spec.B.

All Subaru 2.5-liter turbo engines utilize Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing technology, which helps optimize low and mid-range torque and high-end output. The Legacy 2.5 GT Limited engine is characterized by a wide torque curve for outstanding power at all speeds. All Legacy engines use an Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system, also referred to as "throttle by wire."

5-Speed Manual and 5-Speed Automatic Transmissions

The 2006 Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Sedan offers a choice between a reinforced, smooth-shifting 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed electronic direct control automatic transmission with a SPORTSHIFT feature for manual control when desired. The 2.5 GT Limited Wagon comes with the automatic as standard. The advanced 5-speed automatic transmission offers a high degree of control in either automatic or manual mode. Using a lateral-g sensor and cornering logic, the transmission can select and hold the appropriate gear to enhance cornering performance. The transmission will actively downshift to maintain optimal traction and control on inclines, as well.

With the SPORTSHIFT feature, the driver can choose to shift manually using the console shift handle or shift buttons on the steering wheel. When placed in "D," the lever can be toggled to the left for manual shift control, and then pushed forward for upshifts and pulled rearward for downshifts. The transmission can provide temporary access to manual mode when in "D" by using the steering wheel shift buttons.

Performance-Bred Chassis Offers High Degree of Safety

Built around a refined version of the company's proven Ring Frame Reinforced safety structure, Legacy models feature as standard equipment front seat side impact air bags and side curtain air bags that offer additional head protection for front and rear occupants. Intelligent dual-stage deployment front air bags use sensors to detect the presence and weight of a front passenger and also the driver's distance from the steering wheel. The system determines front air bag deployment strength for optimal occupant protection. All Legacy models for 2006 feature active front head restraints, which can help reduce potential whiplash injury in a rear collision.
