Vauxhall Astra 5 Door 2006
Vauxhall Astra 5 Door Design - Dynamic lines and intelligent use of space
- Powerful appearance - Balanced proportions - Easy rear passenger access - Strong feeling of spaciousness - Keyless entry, Keyless start system from Autumn '04 on
With its expressive, dynamic appearance the new Vauxhall Astra makes a strong statement in the sector. A complete departure from the fourth generation's more conservative design, the new, fifth generation car represents the latest stage in Vauxhall Astra's evolution.
Cleverly designed to balance every proportion, the new Astra is highly pleasing to look at. It has a well-composed architecture that works well with its sleek, taut surfaces and bold outlines to give the newcomer an exclusive appearance, which clearly sets it apart from all of its competitors.
Striking from every angle, new Vauxhall Astra looks spectacular
Dynamically designed, from the strong V-shape of the front end to the sweeping and elegant crease line that runs from the wide, radiator grille into the cabin and on down to the rear, the new Vauxhall Astra is pleasing to look at from every angle.
From the side, the wedge-shaped profile of the car creates length and dynamism - an impression enhanced by the 2614 mm (103 inches) wheelbase - and this is reflected again in the smooth transition from the A-pillar to the front wing.
This profile is also influenced by the flush wheel arches - especially when they're filled by wheels up to 18 inches in diameter, available for the new Astra direct from the factory for the first time - and the flared door sills. Together with the wider track this underlines Vauxhall Astra's athletic appearance.
In addition to a sleek silhouette, Vauxhall Astra is made to look shorter than it actually is by subtle narrowing of the body at the front and rear - although in fact the newcomer is 139 mm (5.5 inches) longer than its predecessor and is also 85 mm (3.35 inches) wider. The compact impression created by Astra is strengthened again by short overhangs and the futuristic design of the 3D headlamps integrated into Vauxhall Astra's side line.
But design must also be functional and evidence of this is shown by the C-pillar positioning. Located as far back as possible, the re- positioning of the C-pillars cleverly makes access to the rear seats more comfortable and provides a good view out of the rear side windows.
High occupant comfort
Another key factor in new Astra's dynamic design is the sportily designed roof line. The roof of the car tapers by almost 50 mm (1.97 inches) at the rear, accentuating the aerodynamic line of the hatchback body, which has a drag coefficient of cD = 0.32.
