Impressively though, this design does not impinge on Vauxhall Astra's usability, as the roof line does not mean less space for the passengers. On the contrary, despite its exciting exterior styling, the new Astra offers typically high levels of occupant comfort thanks to an inspired interior arrangement, and has even grown in important dimensions compared with its predecessor - there is an extra 30mm (1.18 inches) of shoulder space in front and 20 mm (0.79 inches) more in the rear, 40 mm (1.57 inches) more headroom and legroom has been increased by 17 mm (0.67 inches).

Interior spaciousness is reinforced by the relatively upright side windows that convey a comfortable, airy interior feel. In addition, the large rear doors, as well as providing easy comfortable access to the back seats, feature long windows which improve the view for the rear passengers.

Increased cabin space thanks to innovative engineering

This increase in interior space is part way due to the continued development of the rear suspension layout in new Vauxhall Astra. As a priority, engineers refined the rear torsion beam system so it is now compact enough to allow the fuel tank to be located deep between the wheels, lowering Vauxhall Astra's centre of gravity and increasing cabin space.

In addition, this technical development allows the torsion beam's upper surface to be hollow, which means that the rear seats can be installed at a lower level - increasing space and lowering the centre of gravity further still.

Impressive boot capacity

The fifth generation Vauxhall Astra's boot holds 350 litres (VDA), making it one of the largest capacity carriers in its category. By folding up the rear seat back this can be increased to up to 1,300 litres.

However, as an option, a tyre repair kit will be available for new Astra, instead of a spare wheel. This increases boot capacity by 30 litres to 380 litres, making it the largest in its class. The tyre repair kit will be available from later in the year.

Stylish and effective rear lighting clusters

Just like the headlamps, the large tail lamp units of new Astra show the designers' passion for detail and technology. Highlighting the rear styling, the upper section of the rear lights uses innovative 'translucent' technology, the first time this has been installed on a production car.

Featuring an appealing curvaceous design, the lamp unit's bright light - created with the help of special plastic particles - provides much better illumination than conventional lights, especially to the sides. And at night, not only are the indicators easier to see, but the reversing lights notably increase the driver's field of vision when reversing or parallel parking.

Exceptional elegance in classy interior

When developing the design of the new-generation Astra, particular attention was devoted to interior design. This is evident from the superior quality of the surfaces, the use of high-quality materials and the generous sense of space.

Design continuity means that the interior is sculptured by shapes that complement the vehicle's exterior design. The most prominent of these in Vauxhall Astra's interior is the crease down the centre console, directly influenced by the bodywork's central fold. A cohesive piece of design, it divides the elegant metallic surfaces for the infotainment functions into driver and passenger sides.
